Never in a Million Years: Big 12 Lives

Big_12

Just a couple of days ago I thought there was no way the Big 12 Conference would survive intact. How wrong I turned out to be! Although two teams are still leaving they are the worst two teams in the conference in basketball. All they did was improve the strength of our conference by leaving. We will certainly miss Nebraska in football, and it's going to be harder for K-State and KU to win the conference given that we'll play all the current South teams every year. But we're all getting more money and staying in a BCS conference with great basketball competition. It's an awesome result.

Big 12 Implosion

The implosion of the Big 12 Conference is such a depressing mess. My husband and I are completely obsessed with reading all the news and rumors (mostly rumors) and sitting on pins and needles waiting to see what's going to happen. The problem is that we're K-State fans. No one wants us, no one cares about us. And we're probably going to get screwed. (I also attended KU, so I do care what happens to them.)

I thought we'd know something on Tuesday when the Texas Board of Regents meets, but an article I read on Sunday said not to expect a decision until at least Wednesday because the Texas Legislature's Higher Education committee is holding a hearing to find out more information. That would seem rather pointless if a decision is to be made and announced on Tuesday.

I know it's not the end of the world, but it looks likely to be the end of some of our favorite interests as we know them. I wish the University of Texas would just make up its mind and stop stringing us along. If our historical alliances are over, as they already are with Nebraska, it's better to know as soon as possible. I just can't imagine a world in which K-State and KU and Mizzou aren't in a conference together anymore. It's too weird and really unfortunate.
